About Candice

An outdoor scene from Dartmouth Cove, near where Candice lives. There is a wood fence in the foreground and a view of the ocean harbour in the background, with the skyline of Halifax in the very back. It was a sunny day when the photo was taken and the sky and water are very blue.

Hi! I’m Candice (she/her)

I’m a 40-something human currently living in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This is in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. I also lived in Ontario for a lot of my adult life, first in Ottawa, then in Toronto.

East Coast Candice started out as a vegan and running blog called ‘The Vegan Runner Diaries’ back in 2017. I was a half and full marathon runner and wanted a place to talk about my training, races, and share healthy plant-based recipes.

However, my running got derailed at the beginning of 2022 by some health issues that weren’t getting better – in fact, they were getting worse. Most doctors tried to be helpful but no one really knew what was happening. Fortunately, in early 2023 I visited a physiotherapist who had some ideas on what might be happening and was able to direct me to doctors for proper diagnosis. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in June 2023. Running is now off the table, but I work every day to try to find joy in other things in my life.

These days I write about living with a chronic illness, fitness for folks with chronic pain (fellow spoonies, I hear you!), gluten-free and plant-based cooking, and mental health.
